Mount Pleasant, S.C. (November 1, 2023) - Vaughn Ed Kee Parkway is now open to the public after a grand opening ceremony Wednesday. The completion of the project marks a major milestone in the Town of Mount Pleasant's dedication to creating infrastructure that meets the needs of the Town.
Vaughn Ed Kee Parkway connects North Highway 17 to Rifle Range Road. It also includes a segment of the Mount Pleasant Way, a network of connected multi-use paths intended for non-motorized users that will link key portions of the Town including recreation facilities, parks, schools, neighborhoods, commercial zones, and more.
The roadway pays tribute to Officer Vaughn Ed Kee. Officer Kee, a dedicated law enforcement officer with the Mount Pleasant Police Department, was tragically killed in the line of duty in 1985. His commitment to public safety and his unwavering dedication to serving the Mount Pleasant community left a lasting mark on the Town. The Vaughn Ed Kee Parkway, named in his honor, stands as a lasting testament to his sacrifice and the values he embodied.
Wednesday's ceremony brought Officer Kee's family together with representatives of the Mount Pleasant Police and Fire departments along with several town council members including Councilman Carl Ritchie who spoke at the event.
“It’s not just a job, it’s a calling. And you all [police officers] make a lot of sacrifices to do that. Pray for each other, support each other, and make sure you each are able to go home at the end of the shift. We’re honored by this, thank you," said Bill Kee, Vaughn Ed Kee’s Brother.
The Vaughn Ed Kee Parkway symbolizes the unity and strength of the Mount Pleasant community and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our law enforcement officers. It will provide an essential connection between neighborhoods, enhance transportation options, and improve overall quality of life for residents.
