MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (February 27, 2023) - A woman says two Mount Pleasant Police Department (MPPD) officers saved her life after a suspected DUI traffic stop led to the discovery of a brain tumor.
Tamara Palmer was stopped by PFC Schoonmaker and PFC Aton on December 2 after concerned citizens reported her as a possible intoxicated driver. After initiating the traffic stop, PFC Schoonmaker immediately realized that Palmer was having a medical issue and requested additional medical resources. Palmer was transported to an area hospital via ambulance where she was ultimately diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent emergency surgery.
Palmer announced that she is recovering well and shared gratitude for the MPPD. "Because of this angel who got sent to me, I got the best birthday gift ever, my life," said Palmer. "They're saving lives. I want people to know that."
MPPD Chief Mark Arnold also praised his officers. "We're very, very pleased with our officers and what they did and how they handled the situation," he said. "That's what it's all about, keeping the community safe."
Chief Arnold has invited Palmer to attend an upcoming Town Council meeting to present PFC Schoonmaker and PFC Aton with an award for their actions.
