MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (April 16, 2018) – The Town of Mount Pleasant was again named a Tree City USA Community by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. It is the 29th consecutive year that the Town of Mount Pleasant has received this prestigious recognition.
As in years past, Mount Pleasant achieved Tree City USA recognition by proactively meeting four program requirements: a tree board or department, in this case the Planning Department; a tree care ordinance; an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita; and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
“When properly planted and maintained, trees provide numerous benefits to a community. They can reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants, provide wildlife habitat, increase property values and improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood. Over the past 20 years, the Town has planted more than 8,000 trees, mostly live oaks in our community,” said Eddie Bernard, Mount Pleasant Senior Planner, ISA Certified Arborist Municipal Specialist.
