Posted on: April 6, 2017[ARCHIVED] Oyster Reef Build Conducted at Pickett Recreation Area

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (April 6, 2017) – The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, in partnership with the Town of Mount Pleasant Public Services Department and Cario Middle School students, today conducted an annual oyster reef build at the Pickett Bridge Recreation Area.
An estimated nine tons of oyster shells were recycled at the reef on the first day, more will be installed on the following day. Crews will be back on site again tomorrow from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. to complete the project. This initiative is part of the National Pollutant Elimination Discharge System and the Clean Water Act.
Oyster reefs have been installed at various locations in Mount Pleasant, to include Memorial Waterfront Park, Shem Creek Park and Alhambra Hall.
