MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (December 15, 2016) – Mary-Julia Campbell Royall became Tuesday the inaugural recipient of the Cresco Historical Stewardship Award. Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page, Mount Pleasant Town Council and Mount Pleasant Historical Commission members recognized Ms. Royall at the December Town Council Meeting in Council Chambers.
“The Historical Commission created the Cresco Historical Stewardship Award to honor an individual, organization or group that has done exemplary work in studying, preserving, restoring or promoting the history of Mount Pleasant,” said Rick Gutowski, Historical Commission President. “It is a pleasure to present Ms. Royall with this prestigious recognition.”
Mary-Julia Campbell Royall has served as Mount Pleasant’s official historian for the past twenty years and was a founding member of the Mount Pleasant Historical Commission. She published two popular histories of Mount Pleasant, Mount Pleasant: The Victorian Village and Mount Pleasant: The Friendly Town. She also served as President of the Confederate Memorial Association for many years and President of the Christ Church Parish Preservation Society since 1996.
“Congratulations to Ms. Royall for receiving this well-deserved award and for her lifelong commitment to our community,” said Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page. “I also commend the Historical Commission for promoting our town’s cultural and physical heritage through its Roadside Marker Program, oral history projects, historical documents and Black History Month commemorative events.”
