The Mount Pleasant Reading Patrol meets on the third Saturday of each month at Barnes and Noble for an hour of reading, followed by craft and giveaways. It is a free program geared to children ages 5 to 11 that builds a foundation of knowledge and trust for our youth and strengthens their relationship with the police department. Reading and literacy are key factors in school retention and graduation rates and the department believes that it is never too early to develop a lifelong love of reading. For more information, contact Sgt. Les Mauldin at email@example.com or (843) 881-8242 or contact Youth Specialist Tia Egnor at firstname.lastname@example.org or (843) 849-2838, ext. 26664.

Help improve the water quality in Shem Creek by participating in Beach Sweep/River Sweep. This event is South Carolina's largest one-day volunteer cleanup event of its kind. Every 3rd Saturday in September, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., thousands of South Carolinians clear beaches, rivers, lakes, marshes, and swamps of aquatic debris. The cleanup, organized by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources. The Sweep takes place in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup, coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy. Once the Sweep is over, the Ocean Conservancy tallies all of the debris data. This data helps us learn the sources of litter so we can stop pollution before it starts. Town of Mount Pleasant Stormwater Staff will be site captains at the Shem Creek location, but other sites are available throughout the region.
