MOUNT PLEASANT, SC - The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and the PCL Civil Constructors/ICA Engineering (PCL/ICA) Design Build Team are not only replacing the SC 41 swing span bridge over the Wando River, the project also includes roadway improvements for a new “T” intersection at SC-41 and Clements Ferry Road.
The Importance of Surveying
Surveying throughout the project makes certain the work in the field lines up with the project plans. Preconstruction surveying is used to understand the project boundaries and conditions for the initial design, but these measurements are only the beginning. When it is time for construction to begin, construction workers use surveyors to assist with aligning the drilled shaft foundations, columns, and bent caps. Each piece must align properly so it can properly support the piece above it and connect with adjoining elements along the roadway.
New Bridge Takes Shape
The project’s first and second bent caps await the construction of additional bent caps as well as the placement of girders which will support the roadway. As we conclude the first year of construction, crews have placed eighteen of the project’s thirty drilled shafts, six of the project’s columns, and three of the project’s fifteen bent caps. Observers can now see the alignment of the new bridge east of the existing roadway and the width between the bridge’s shafts and columns in the waterway. Look for the last of the drilled shafts to be placed in the river during the coming months along with the progression of the columns and bent caps. In the spring, the bridge’s girders will start arriving and being set on the completed bent caps.
Weeknight Traffic Advisory Remains in Effect
Concrete trucks will continue to utilize the northbound lane of SC 41 to place concrete for the new bridge’s drilled shafts, columns and bent caps. To accommodate these concrete placements, the northbound lane of SC 41 on the existing bridge will be closed intermittently from now until summer of next year. All lane closures will be scheduled between the hours of 8 pm and 6 am, and traffic will be maintained across the bridge with flaggers directing alternating traffic within the southbound lane. Look for onsite notification by means of message boards prior to all lane closures.
