Reading Patrol Celebrates Halloween

By Martine Wolfe-Miller, Communications Officer

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (Oct. 16, 2015) – The Mount Pleasant Reading Patrol will appear at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre, from 11 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, Oct.17. The program is free and meets at Barnes & Noble every third Saturday of the month. It is geared to children ages 4 to 11. The theme this month is Halloween. Youth Specialist Ashley Houdyschell will be reading “A Halloween Scare in Charleston” by Eric James and “Happy Halloween, Biscuit!” by Alyssa Satin Capucilli.

The event will conclude with free crafts and prizes.

“The Reading Patrol is all about building a foundation of knowledge and trust for our youth and strengthening their relationship with the great men and women in blue of the Mount Pleasant Police Department,” said Mayor Linda Page. “The program is a fun, safe and engaging way to build partnerships.”

“We often hear about taking back the streets when fighting crime,” said Police Chief Carl Ritchie. “Our department believes that if you don’t lose the streets, you won’t have to take them back. The Mount Pleasant Police Department Reading Patrol Program is at the heart of our philosophy of community engagement and prevention. I would like to commend Sgt. William Mauldin for his leadership and applaud the Reading Patrol officers for their dedication. I would also like to thank Barnes & Noble for partnering with us for the second year in this venture.”

“The Reading Patrol Program is simple: build a connection early on with the youth of our community, and they will remember it when facing difficult decisions,” said Sgt. Mauldin. “We want to build bridges one book at a time and we plan to read to children in a fun and congenial atmosphere that will lend itself to making lifetime connections.”

“Reading and literacy are key factors in school retention and graduation rates,” said Youth Specialist Ashley Houdyschell. “Elementary school children are at a very special age where police officers are heroes and role models. We want to preserve and build on that positive sentiment.”

Children will also have the opportunity to get their Buddy card autographed by several of the police officers present at the reading. “We invite all children to ask a police officer present at the reading for a Buddy Card. By collecting the signatures of ten police officers, they’ll get to interact with our staff and they’ll be able to claim a prize at Town Hall. Instead of trading in pictures of celebrities, the Cops & Kids Buddy Card program trades in autographs of real-life heroes, our police force,” said Sgt. Mauldin.
