MOUNT PLEASANT, SC - The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and the PCL Civil Constructors/ICA Engineering (PCL/ICA) Design Build Team are not only replacing the SC 41 swing span bridge over the Wando River, the project also includes roadway improvements for a new “T” intersection at SC-41 and Clements Ferry Road.
After experiencing approximately 2 feet of rain in three days, the SC 41 Bridge Replacement Project weathered the storm. Construction barges were able to rise and fall with the river, and silt fencing kept erosion from being a problem. Because the Wando is a tidal river, we do not anticipate major impacts to this project, but like everyone else in South Carolina, we are closely watching the downstream impacts of midland flooding.
While the recent rainfall was a one in a thousand year event, be assured that the design for the replacement bridge and roadway improvements are being built to the latest storm drainage standards to effectively respond for years and storms ahead.
Relocated Utilities Prepare for Intersection Improvements
SCE&G has completed the relocation of their gas lines on the north side of the existing bridge and expects to complete the relocation of their electric lines later this month. The footprint for the new SC41 and Clements Ferry Road “T” intersection is also starting to take shape with initial grading activities underway.
Bridge Foundation Emerges
On land, with several of the bridge’s substructure columns in place, crews have begun constructing the bent caps that will support the bridge’s girders. On the water, construction of the new bridge’s foundational elements is now being completed in earnest. Cranes and support equipment are working across the southern end of the project, pouring columns in preparation for the bent caps.
Please be reminded that a Notice to Mariners has been posted with the US Coast Guard and that all equipment and barges should be given a wide berth when in the vicinity.
Traffic Advisory in Effect:
Trucks delivering concrete will need to use the northbound lane of SC 41 to place concrete for the new bridge’s foundations, columns, and bent caps. To accommodate these concrete placements, the northbound lane of SC 41 on the existing bridge will be closed sporadically from now until summer of next year. All lane closures will occur between the hours of 8 pm and 6 am, and traffic will be maintained across the bridge with flaggers directing alternating traffic within the southbound lane. Look for onsite notification through message boards prior to all lane closures.
