MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (July 2, 2015) – The Town of Mount Pleasant recently hosted its second monthly business outreach meeting with the South Carolina Ports Authority at the Wando Welch Terminal, Mount Pleasant. Councilmembers Mark Smith, Elton Carrier, and Gary Santos, along with Town staff members, met with President & CEO Jim Newsome, SVP of External Affairs Barbara Melvin, and Government Relations Manager Tate Zeigler.
“The business outreach meetings, spearheaded by the Economic Development Committee and Councilmember Mark Smith, are a great way to connect with local businesses, exchange information, understand the challenges and opportunities our local businesses face, and strengthen community relationships,” said Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page. “The meetings are informal roundtable discussions where business owners and their staff have an opportunity to discuss topics important to them with their elected officials.”
The group discussed the port’s future plans, including the opening of the new terminal located at the former Navy Yard, as well as the Charleston Harbor deepening project. The group also toured the Wando Welch Terminal, which was operating at full capacity on the last day of the fiscal year.
The Business Outreach Meetings are part of the town wide Government Outreach and Engagement Strategy. The Government Outreach Office works with various Town departments, citizens, neighborhood associations, civic groups, faith organizations, business leaders, and non-profit entities to create community-wide conversations and foster collaborative partnerships that will lead to strong community relationships, a shared common identity, and a more engaged community.
